CASE STUDY - Marine 2D Acquisition

Available for Download

The need to discover new and unexploited hydrocarbon reserves is resulting in frontier exploration in the world's less-hospitable regions. WGP's 18 month contract with TGS-Nopec resulted in successful 2D survey data from multiple Marine Seismic Data Acquisition surveys in some of the world’s most challenging marine environments.

Greenland &: Canada, Baffin Bay

Stretching from east coast Canada to west coast Greenland with the majority of its 692,000mk² surface area deep within the Arctic Circle, prone to temperatures below -28°C and riddled with dense iceberg fields from the Arctic pack ice, Baffin Bay was successfully surveyed in two successive seasons by WGP.

  • WGP's vessel was the first commercial 2D seismic boat to attempt a survey campaign of Baffin Bay.
  • Ambitious survey targets were met with the design and implementation of innovative adaptions to the source system and its operation to enable the production of a consistent signal in freezing conditions.
  • Overcoming high seas and inclement weather WGP provided an average of over 100km of shot data per day.
  • In extremely adverse conditions, over the course of two seasons 15,571km was acquired without incident.

Somaliland, Gulf of Aden

Opposite Yemen on the south shores of the Gulf of Aden lies the autonomous region of the Republic of Somaliland, whose waters remain unreliably charted.

Any marine operational presence in the area necessitates coordination with the national coastguard and fisheries agency as well as additional security considerations. WGP carried out a preliminary 2D seismic survey of Somaliland national waters with a view to sufficient data being acquired to allow exploration blocks to be licensed by the Somaliland Ministry of Water and Mineral Resources.

  • WGP fully mitigated the potential inherent risks of the operation with prior security consultations.
  • Additional safety craft and crew were mobilised to ensure wellbeing of crew, equipment, vessel and survey.
  • Exacting client requirements warranted a planned survey period of 60 days with a total program of 5,171km of shot line.
  • WGP successfully acquired 5,143km of full fold data, at an average of 85km per day, and without incident.
